Surface area calculator

The surface area calculator will determine the surface area of a cone, cube, cylinder, rectangular cuboid and sphere.

The formulas for surface area of a cone, cube, cylinder, rectangular cuboid and sphere are given. The calculator will do all the work for you rapidly with precise results. However, if you wish to calculate manually, the formulas will be handy. Also, an example of how to calculate the surface area of a cylinder is provided.

The formulas for calculating the surface area differ depending on the kind of geometric solid. Here are the surface area formulas:

Cone:  A = πr² + πr√(r² + h²), where r is the radius and h is the height of the cone.

Cube:  A = 6s², where s is the length of the side.

Cylinder: A = πr² + πr√(r² + h²), where r is the radius and h is the height of the cone.

Rectangular cuboid: A = 2(ab + bc + ac), where a, b and c are the lengths of sides of the cuboid.

Sphere: A = 4πr², where r stands for the radius of the sphere

Surface area example:

Cylinder

Suppose we have a cylinder with height of 6 cm and radius of 4 cm.  Substituting 6 for h and 4 for r, the surface area is

A =  π(4)² + π(4)√(4)² + (6)²

A = 16π + 4π√52

Note that all units in the final answer must be squared since we are dealing with area.
